Figured it was time start up an art thread of my own. Maybe it'll give me motivation to do more. I used to draw all the time. Now I carve soapstone, and will soon begin trying my hand at woodcarving and woodturning. I haven't drawn much in the past few years, but maybe that will change.
I'll start off with a pic I did back in 1998. Kalle has always liked it and the next time I see her I'm going to give her the origional.

I don't have a lot of my own stuff on my computer, but I'll post most of what I have at some point.

Can't recall what year this one is from. Either from 1999 or 2000. It's a creature from the mind of my old friend Raist, called a Dragffon... a hybrid of dragon and griffon. The one I drew is an immature dragffon. I would draw, scan, send and he would tell me any changes to make. After several edits, this was the result. Never got around to trying a full body drawing.

Its from 1999. I remember because Raist then presented him to me as a present in our RPs. ~nods and gives the Dragffon a treat~
Wow! Just WOW!
You are so cool.

Here's one from way back in 1993. I used to make up all sorts of fantasy creatures to draw when I was in high school. This one is of a race of creatures that thrive on magic, called Dragonkin. I used the full page... amazing I still had any ink left when I was done!

Thanks everyone. I've hardly done any drawing at all in the past five years, But I'll post some of my soapstone work soon.

Here's something a bit more recent. I enjoy carving soapstone and have made a small collection of stands for my crystal spheres. This is one I did about a year ago. It's carved from a Brazilian soapstone and I used beeswax to give it a nice polish.

Here it is with my sugilite sphere.

woah dude, you have some serious talent. Awesome, can't wait to see more.
Dude you made those? I love making things with my hands, that seems really interesting, might try it sometime.:D
Borderlander
9th May 2006, 15:29
I only made the stand. The stone the sphere is made from is too hard for any of my tools.
Here's one of my earlier stands, carved about three years ago. It's also from a Brazilian soapstone very similiar to the previous one, although I never put a polish on it, deciding instead to leave it 'raw'. I deliberately made the spirals uneven, going for an organic look. Didn't quite get what I was after, but I'm still happy with how it turned out. The sphere is the same sugilite as in the last one.

three words, sirrah!
"Ball o' Taint!"
Borderlander
10th May 2006, 16:18
umm... ok, I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.
cynewolfe
10th May 2006, 16:33
It was something we came up with in our Wheel of Time d20 campaign. The gamemaster felt my Ashaman had good reason to filter out the Taint and I, being a devious shit, realized that Taint had to go somewhere...
Eventually, my Ashaman started flinging around Balls of Taint filtered out from Saidin and that globe is more or less what I've always pictured a Ball of Taint to look like.

LOL
Well ok, here a couple more ball stands.
The one on the left, holding the "ball o' taint", is another variety of Brazilian soapstone, polished with beeswax. It's currently used as a display piece at a local shop.
The one on the right, holding a hematite sphere, is of a Kenyan soapstone called 'kissi stone'. It's much harder than the Brazilian stone, but has a much finer texture. It can be brought to a very smooth polish if you spend the time to do it. I carved it with five seperate spirals, one for each Element: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit.

Another oldie. In the summer of '95, I had just graduated highschool, and was having a lazy day. I spent quite a while relaxing while sketching a tree in the yard. I've always been happy with how it turned out, and it was such a beautiful day. Sorry about how light it is. I had quite a soft touch with the pencil that day.

thats really cool, I love tree sketches, is that pointilism?
Borderlander

nope, just a lot of little pencil strokes. If I'm doing a pointilism picture, I'd use pen.

This one recieved a little more attention than I usually put into that sketch, but the mountians and trees are done in a very simple way... so yeah, about 10 minutes would be close.

Love your work BL. Do you do anything on the computer? I'd love to do a collaboration with you.
Borderlander
14th May 2006, 15:24
I haven't done much on the computer besides a few sigs. They're basically just taking pieces of pics I found on google and sticking them together. The graphic program I have is psp7.
Here's a sig I made for myself to use over at WB's site. I faded the background too much, but it's supposed to be a WoT map

Borderlander
14th May 2006, 15:35
hmm... sounds interesting. Maybe it would help me get back into drawing. I haven't really drawn much at all in the past five years. How would you propose accomplishing it, as I have no printer or scanner.
hmm... I need a new set of pens...
Heartsbane
14th May 2006, 16:22
You can A) spend $50 bucks for a basic scanner
OR
B) go to the local library and use there scanner and email those pictures to yourself
Tamuril
15th May 2006, 02:06
Ah libraries! What a good idea. Idealy it would be nice if you had a Wacom tablet. :p Maybe I'll sell you my scanner for $20. Maybe less. How did you scan those pictures onto your computer? If you could scan some things like that I could always clean it up and make it transparent to put onto my photos and we could make a compilation that way.
Borderlander
15th May 2006, 03:57
I used to have a scanner, but through the mistreatment of others through many moves, it became a big paperweight. I plan on getting a three in one printer/scanner/copier once I can afford to. I have NO extra money for the time being. It's too bad, because there's a few other things I'd also like to get... like a new computer! This one is 7 years old, and getting really full.

Drew this unicorn back in 1999 for a little girl that Kalle taught. I was never really happy with it. The front legs are completely wrong and the head is way too small. Sometimes I have trouble with proportions.

A little sketch I did years ago in high school. Goes to show you how much I paid attention in class.
I was going through a stage of making up and drawing new creatures for possible use in D&D. I was thinking something along the lines of a wizard's familiar when I drew this one.

hmm... what else do I have...
Ah, here we go. I carved out this little Goddess figure out of soapstone. surprisingly it only took me about two hours to carve it. I left the stone unfinished, because the gritty texture of that stone gave it an aged look that I liked. It's suspended in the center of a braid of sweetgrass to make a wall hanging.

Ok, I'm pretty much out of stuff now.
Here's my latest soapstone piece. It's my attempt at the ancient "Venus of Willendorf" figure. Something to 'google' if you're bored.
I apologize for the poor quality of the pic. All I had to take it with was my webcam, and I tried to clean it up the best I could in psp.
btw, the legs are not broken off. Where they end is the natural edge of the stone.

Thanks Shintaro!
I have some much needed vacation time coming up in june, so hopefully I'll find some inspiration to get some carving done. I have a decent amount of several different soapstones, but it can be hard to come by, so I don't like to start filing away at a piece unless I have a good idea of what I'm trying to accomplish.
I do have one idea right now, but it would be a gift for Kalle, so it's a secret!
... and that is going to drive her nuts! ~grins~

But I did find this! It's one of the first sig pics I did for someone else.
The Earth and Moon are actual photos I found on some astronomy websites. It took me a while to find a dragon that I felt was right. It's the same style I like draw dragons, but I can't draw worth sh*t with a mouse!

I finally started up my wood lathe and am very excited about this new toy! I should begin posting new creations before long as I learn this new hobby. I'm probably going to try and get in touch with a local woodturning club and see if I can get some proper lessons.
Borderlander
28th June 2006, 16:44
I've been playing around with my lathe. Discovered some tricks today for getting cleaner cuts that will be a big help. I really should find someone to teach me these things.
I wasn't trying to create anything... a 'doodle', I guess. I decided to try what's called a captive ring, and it actually worked on my first try... granted it's quite rough. I'll probably need to make a tool for doing those better.
Anyway, here's my first captive ring!
