View Full Version : Upgrading the forum

As I said in another thread, I'm going to be upgrading the forum to the next stable version. What this means is that we'll be losing some of the hacks and little extras I've added on the forum. I've been looking around at some of the things that are available with vb3.5.

What I want to know is what do YOU want me to add when we upgrade the forum?

One thing that I want to add is the Journal option, this might do away with the reflections forum if each person can keep a journal. I'm not sure how this works yet though.

If you want to see what hacks are available go to www.vbulletin.org and take a look.

Wow, 3.5.0 is all shiny without all the hacks!

*hugs Jean for the good work*

I decided I plan too much and just converted everything. Some things will be messed up for a little bit, but I'll get it sorted out. It's done though and with no down time. Yet... :type:

Edit: I know all the avatars aren't working, I have no idea why right now but I'll sort that out too. lol

so what was so unstable about the last version?

Jean

so what was so unstable about the last version?

All sorts of things according to vbulletin. The main thing is, they won't do any support on the old version. So, we're upgrading.

We used to have that. A LONG time ago. I think that mike took it down for some reason. I loved that thing. Makes using the chatroom a LOT easier

How long 'till the boards look normal again. Since Jenn and I use the same computer we can't just stay logged in, and the login boxes look weird.

Jean
14th October 2005, 23:30
lol It's going to take a while for them to look normal. Get use to weird looking stuff for a while.

Oooo

You don't have to edit anything. But just click on an edit post button and look what happens. I DO like that

Jean
14th October 2005, 23:33
Hey, I didn't even know that, very cool.

Since I decided to be spontaneous and just upgrade us, I know absolutely nothing about this upgrade. :D

tehehe ....*freaks out and runs away*

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. :)

Jean

Click on the edit button in your post and watch what happens.

Ok, I'm going to bed before my head bounces off the keyboard.

Funky upgrades. Let me know what I can do to help, testing, calming the masses, etc.

Oh snap. Editing is FUN.

It goes to the edit page..... :2eyes:It shouldn't. It should make the edit box appear right over the post. Kinda like the quick reply box

Tenaka

Yeah, i got it working. Just deleted all the cache etc.

I had a look at this one, it looks pretty cool! :)

We use sigma chat, not flashchat so that hack won't work. BUT, sigma chat has made it where you have to upgrade your plan to use the chat with vbulletin, so it looks like we might be getting who in chat after all. Bastards wanting more money.

For the "old thread" hack, how long do you think I should set the time limit for posting in the threads?

Tenaka
15th October 2005, 09:01
Ah, i thought Flashchat sounded weird at the time.

The old thread one is a hard one to judge.

At what point does it become necrophilia? :p

EDIT: Looking back at the threads, i wouldn't post in much that hadn't had a post in about 2 months...... unless it was a decent topic.

So... An upgrade... Sounds cool. The forum looks a tad screwed up, but It's temporary. Awesome job, Jean!

I like to revive dead threads occasionally. It's fun to go all the way to the last page and bring an old thread up. People start wondering who everyone is :D ;)

Soo. That's what happened. Got a bit of a shock when I opened firefox, and wotism appeared. though the page hagn't loaded properly, and tried to reload a couple of timer before sensing something different. :p
stupide me.

Edit: oooh. nice edit thang. :D

I know, it was one of my hacks. I'm in the process of getting that back.

whoah...
Well at least I know what's going on now, I was confused for a minute on why the forums were like this.
Anyways best wishes on the editing process, Jean!
I think a reasonable time for old threads to be closed is around 6 months from the last post. That way we don't get any really blatant necrophilia, and if it's only a couple months and people like the topic, then they can still revive it.

Well, I remade the homepage. It's intergrated with vbulletin now. Still working on it of course, but it looks better than without having error messages there.

Goo!!!! o.0!

I like it, but is there like an option for each person to maybe personalize what they would like and/or where?

I don't think so, but let me check anyway, I might have overlooked it.

If you have any suggestion on how the layout should be, please post them. I kind of did all the changes on the spur of the moment, so I'm open for suggestions.

Well I think it's good how it is, I just don't personally care too much about the current poll and so I see I can minimize it, but I wasn't sure perhaps if I could arrange it to my liking.

I miss two things from the old site. I think that little "artwork of the day" thing was really nice. I mean artwork from the Wotism Gallery of course. Just maybe something small to display an image and who it was by?

The other thing I liked was that in your User CP under the reps you got you could see who you gave your latest rep too. It helped me keep track and so I was able to spread it out and stuff.

Seems to be working fine so far, at this point. The Edit thing is cool too.

I like the changes that I have seen so far. Good Job Jean.

oh hey! I just noticed that it now puts how many posts people have made right under there name. thats kinda cool. (could have sworn I had more posts than that. ~shrugs~ oh well) that with the rep system can be helpful for a newbie to figure out who they might want to turn to for advice about something.

I agree that a thread that is dead for 6 months should probably be kept dead. if we really like the idea in the thread we can always make a new one. its kinda confusing when suddenly this really long thread pops up from no where and you look and its been almost a year since the last post.

WolfBrother
17th October 2005, 16:01
I agree with the posts. Not sure that the rep system would really be a good way to determine whom one should turn to for advice though, considering rep is based on how well a post is liked

I agree on both points, killing topics after 6 months and the post counter being useful.

Alright, alright, I'm an arsehole and a pedant. But that's not how you spell 'losing'. Shut up! I know this is petty, but this is what my life's all about, don't remove my purpose!

I'll fix it just for you. :p

btw, I need a non-moderator to try to post in a thread that is more than 120 days old and to see what happens. I'm curious to see if a hack is working.
