View Full Version : Book 11 Title: Knife of Dreams

Wotmania and Dragmount have confired that the title of Book 11 will be Knife of Dreams. Dragonmount was able to get confirmation from RJ himself:
That is the title I've given to Tor Books, Knife of Dreams. It came to me much earlier in the writing than usual. Wait until you see the epigram I've written for it.
My personal opinion, it doensn't fit with the titles of the other books very well.

The Eye of The World - makes sense, good title
The Great Hunt - makes sense, good title
The Dragon Reborn - makes sense, good title
The Shadow Rising - close enough, good title
The Fires of Heaven - eh, decent title
Lord of Chaos - fair enough, dencent title
A Crown of Swords - makes sense, lacks pinach
The Path of Daggers - came from one obscure line in the book, great title if it tied in more
Winter's Heart- eh, ok title
Crossroads of Twilight - WTF????, sounds kind of over the top
Knife of Dreams - currently unknown, WAY over the top, there better be a damn knife in this book and it better be important :eek5:

Actually... I'd guess that the title's referring to dreams more than knives. In other words, it's probably going to involve something major in T'A'R, Lanfear, Moggy, or all of the above.

All I know is I hope it is longer than before and progresses the story along. I hope it is not just another scene setter.
But it definitely must involve the Slayer who is Lan's relative? and Moirane in some form with Thom Merrilin.

Kinslayer's Dagger is just a small mountain range, a spur off the Dragonwall. Dragonmount, on the other hand, is a big mountain on a plain, just west of Tar Valon.

Amazon UK has posted a synopsis for the book. It's one of those previews that tells you nothing, but manages to make it sound exciting anyway. lol
Synopsis:
Robert Jordan's epic fantasy saga The Wheel of Time is now firmly established as a classic of the genre and a world- wide bestseller. Now the series continues with the eagerly-awaited eleventh volume ... The Seanchan Empire has primed their invading armies and they are advancing rapidly. The people look to the Aes Sedai sisterhood for protection, but the Aes Sedai have grown complacent after generations of authority. Yet as their numbers have dwindled, a secret society has been hiding under the White Tower's very nose. A society rich in power that could make all the difference in the final conflict ... Yet Rand Al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, is the only one who can triumph against the Dark One, and he will have to battle against the Seanchan, the White Tower and betrayal before the last battle.

Amberly

the Aes Sedai know about the kin but the kin dont know that and the rest of the world surely doesnt know that thus 'secret society' and they are "rich in power" because they have more people than the Aes Sedai and they live longer they also know more about some weaves. the text is only for the purpose of sales so they make the kin sound more interesting by saying they're a secret society rich in power instead they are an off branch of run aways who know some cool stuff

It actually refers to five hundred pages of how Egwene clips her nails with a butter knife during her capture. Another four hundred pages of the whisking sound the knife makes when it cuts each nail. Actually, the secret society refers to another secret society, who will be clouding things up even more, and wasting more pages in the book. It is probably the society that is behind all of the sitters from the different Ajah's being so young - Remember Egwene wonders how that could be possible, it is almost as if someone was deliberately managing things behind the scenes. Of course, they wonder whether it could be the Black Ajah, because they know of no other group that has power that stretches across the Ajahs. But then they dismiss that thought, because if the Black Ajah had that much power, they would be in charge of everything already.
Obviously this unkown group is the secret society they are talking about. I wonder what this secret knowledge is.
I seem to remember that someone in Elaida's group also noted that a lot of sitters appeared to be extremely young for their positions.
Just what we need, another complication, when we cannot even advance all the plotlines we already have, in an entire book. This series will never end...

But then wouldn't Cadsuane and Verin know what the other was doing? Somewhere in the books, while they were in Cairhien, one of them wonders what the other one is doing. Don't remember who, though..

4th Dimension
22nd March 2005, 19:37
Well if you like some loony theories about synopsis written in bad English here you are
(I wrote this like a post on Theories sub forum so it should explain it's strange shape)
Wll since we know that Min is NEVER wrong we may safely assume that Morraine is still alive and will be coming back soon. Probably she will be rescued by Mat and Thom (I think it will be so because Ewgene dreamed :"Mat throwing dice with blood streaming down his face, the wide brim of his hat pulled low so she could not see his wound, while Thom Merrilin put his hand into a fire to draw out the small blue stone that now dangled on Moiraine?s forehead.", and poor Mat will probably loose his eye there. But that is not shure because Ewgenes Dreamer's dreams are not 100% shure as Min readings.). Oh by the way Cyande if mot probably Leanfer.
For Ewgene, I think this will happen. Tar Valon will be attacked by Sceanshan
(again Ewgenes dream "A small white plinth stood centered in that circle, supporting an oil-lamp made of clear glass. The flame on that lamp burned bright and steady, without flickering. It was white too. Suddenly a pair of birds flashed out of the mist, two ravens black as night. Streaking across the spire-top, they struck the lamp and flew on without so much as a pause. The lamp spun and wobbled, dancing around atop the plinth, flinging off droplets of oil. Some of those drops caught fire in midair and vanished. Others fell around the short column, each supporting a tiny, flickering white flame. And the lamp continued to wobble on the edge of falling." and Ewgene has seen omething she thinks it's Draghtar but does not look like one and probably is one of Scheanshan raken scouts for Fists of Haven airborn infantry)
and she will be probably saved by a Sheanshan woman carrying a sword ("Abruptly, the ledge dropped away from under her with the crack of crumbling stone, and she caught frantically at the cliff, fingers scrabbling to find a hold. [...] Suddenly a woman appeared, clambering down the sheer side of the cliff out of the clouds, making her way as deftly as if she were walking down stairs. There was a sword strapped to her back. Her face wavered, never settling clearly, but the sword seemed as solid as the stone. The woman reached Egwene's level and held out one hand. "We can reach the top together," she said in a familiar drawling accent.") and I dont know who's that woman but Tuon says shes been trained in arts of suitable weapons and that probably means swordmanship (since w guesd that Mat will go in Finn Land we can assume Tuon may folow him and I'm sure he can "politely" ak them for a passage to Tar Valon (on the other hand he may not specify where to go and knowing finn they might drop him off at the last place he would go Tar Valon full of AS (which he hates) nad Scheanshan (from which he took DoNM))).
Wow what a post!!!!!!!!!! I only need to add how will Perrin get Faile out and Rand's troubles when meeting false DoNM and I've got synopsis of the entir book.
Now since you all want Slayer I can give it to you with slight change in story. Well instead loosing an eye to free Morraine Mat coul loose it because Slayer could be finn champion (we se him entering Tower of Gangenhi in book 4 which lead to finn world so we can assume he's at leat friendly with nakes and foxes) and to free Morraine he neede to fight win Slayer. For Rand I have only ome vague idea. It's allmoust certan that he will be put in that male a'dam but how will he break loose I don't know, but maby he will be saved by Perrin (Min predicted that he will be needed twice by Ran's side to help Rand (Dumai Wells was once)) and we know that Perrin is probably going to probably ally himself with Scheanshan to free Faile. But that mistery Sheanshan who would help Ewgene might not be Tuon, it could be some ranom S woman who we didn't yet meat. And Gawin is outside Tar Valon so if RJ doesn't put them finaly together, or bring Morraine back to story or if he writes another COT I'm personaly goning to torture (He would think Shemirage is nice after I have finished with him)!!!
Time has spoken.

I've heard Crossroads of Twilight was a major disappointment, though I wouldn't know, as I'm currently reading the Fires of Heaven (it was either that or the Fish of Unleavened Bread; a tough choice). i guess complaining about the decline of the book content wasn't enough(which is well deserved).. but seriously you must be getting bored if your complaining about the titles now. the first thing i thought of when i heard/read that the next book was called knife of dreams was that we'll probably see a battle on a hole different level through dreams.. maybe some of that fantastic stuff from the age of legends will come back. and i think that it goes without saying that knife of dreams could also mean "cut by dreams" which has some possibilities.
i personally think this is a dumb topic to complain about... you can make anything look dumb if you mock it enough.. oooh the eye of the world!! what other body part can we stick with this? the ear of the ocean!!! let's be serious, the title is fine

yeah, if he wants to get this series cleared up in the next 2 books, then they're gonna have to be books that either

2) end stupidly with plots not properly finished.

Hey, just curious on that map you made, where is the stedding that Perrin and Egwene go to when they get the shit kicked out of them by the whitecloaks in book 1? The one with the watering hole and the ruins of the Artur Hawkwing statue.
I thought it was somewehere between Shadar Logoth and Caemlyn?
4th Dimension
21st May 2005, 17:04
Wait a sec until I scan map in my book(note it's in Serbian).
It's between whitebridge ('Beli most' on map) and Caemlyn ('Kaemlin'). Statue of AH is marked on map. I didn't include it in map because I limited myself on inhabited stedding but i will mark it right away(it will take som time because then I need to upload it using modem and it will take a while).
So how you like the map?
I will accept any recomendations for moving something or adding.

Titles don't matter, content does. After all, they are all subtitles anyway. The actual title of all of it is the Wheel of Time now isn't it? It is short, sweet, to the point and if fits the series. Nuf said about the title.
As far as content, since RJ has kept us enthralled and wanting more even though we were all disappointed in CoT, I for one will withhold judgement until the volume is in my hands and I am reading it.

Embers Falling on Dry Grass
As with the last two books, Simon&Schuster will publish the prologue to Knife of Dreams as an e-book under the Scribner imprint. The title of the prologue is Embers Falling on Dry Grass. A release date has not been set but it will be available late June or early July. Price is $3.50. There is also an excerpt of the prologue included with the paperback edition of New Spring: The Novel scheduled for release on May 31st.
And I don't know if it will interest someone i seems it will be Galads POV, but only seems.

Hey, does anyone else think that the stupid artist makes Perrin look like he's in his 30's?
Also, that dagger that Gaul (presumably) is wearing looks a little too much like a sword to me...
And he's got a bit of a belly! But he's a stone dog, so that's allowed.

This one by my opinion is the worstest cover in entire series.
Aiel with sword, bahhhhh

Mazrim_Taim
8th June 2005, 17:01
Yeah...
The weird NOT TALL! looking Loial. The non sexy Lanfear. And the NON red hair NON cool looking Rand with a WESTERN sword (it is curved dammit!). And those trolloc things...They look like normal humans but for their armor...what's with that?!
Yeah..the Great Hunt aint good either. Though I hate the one from the Shadow Rising the most, as I have no idea which characters are which and have read no scene in the book that looks anything like that. Maybe that's just rand chilling by the wagon talking to an aiel, and a few other aiel walking around. And I think that's Isendre whatshername or maybe lanfear in the foreground...
Still, the scenes the artist gives are poorly done, and usually have little to do with the book (though book covers that give too much away are not cool as well), and the characters are often not accurate to descriptions in the book.
Ok, nough ranting for me.

The Knife of Dreams refers to either,as it has been mentioned, Slayer-Isam/Luc, or possibly Thom's or Mat's knives. We know that Thom pulls Moiriane's stone from a fire. This may mean that she has been kept prisoner by the *Finn. Now, Mat would go after this, considering he has some serious payback issues with the Snakes and Foxes.
So if we are considering a rescue mission to find Moiraine, it would include: Thom, Mat, Perrin(to go through the Tower of Ghenjei to to get Faile, as Hopper once hinted.) Birgitte would also go because she is losing memories of Gaidal, and she will probably trade herself for Moiraine.
Tell me what youthink.
Mat
Shawn1141
21st June 2005, 13:49
I thought it referred more to Tel'aran'riod and the concequences their. But your idea for rescuing Moiraine seems like it would work. But I don't know if Birgitte would trade herself for Moraine because she's bonded to Elayne and that could really screw up her brain.
4th Dimension
21st June 2005, 20:37
No Mat would probably gamble or play some game ('Snakes and Foxes' that Oliver plays. He allways loosesbut he doesnt then trow the dices) and probabl loose or trade his eye. That Egwene Dream Thom and Mat were together in it. Mar was gambling witouth an eye while Thom was pulling out the stone.
I dont think that Perin would save Faile in thet fasion trought th TOG. Yes he will probably be needed to show the tower but he will have a big battle early in the bookwhile probably allied with Seanchan(a litile observation. All big fraction baddies names start with an S, Shadow, Shaido, Seanchan. Triple S of doom :D ). And Perin would probably be needed to be close to Rand for the second time to fulfil Min's viewening when Semirage (Ananath) cacures him, thought I doubit she will wear the braicelet because of the backfire effect. Mat will probably meet Perin after or just before the battle with Shaido. See this http://www.wotmania.com/theorypostdbtheory.asp?ID=1037&Category=Maps
It would be nice for Galad to finaly stumble upon Baerlin so she can finaly find her man in white(I can say here something aout Barlines taste but I will refrain my self because it's not important, but if you want to know just tell, it's nothing special just an observation why she woul like galad so much).
Whos remaining.
Ah Egghead.
She will probably be doing undercover in TV. Possibly via dreams and it allmoust sure that Seanchan will attack soon and a Seanchan woman will save her. Who would she be it's a question but probably a new character or Tuon or that Domon's Seanchan Chick.
Nyneave will be sniffing and telling how foolish men are while acting as a child when Cadsuande using (what's the name of thet ex Seanchan damaine stronger than NYN)<-her.
Logain will be retaicking BT or he wont cos he will probably have his hands full when Seanchan Capture Rand.
Elene will probably get that bloody crown, finaly.
Ah yes I forgot Slayer. Yo know he is a kind of antythesis of Perin, his arch enemy. Perin's a wolfbrother, while Slayer sleys wolfes in T'A'R, and both have access to it. And remember how Slayer got away from Perin, by using TOG (Tower of Gangehi) so hes probably familiar with the place. So if they go there they could easil run into him.
Now the thing that wories me is that RJ said when he anaunced that he handed the book to ToR on 7th A long-running thread or two finally get tied off
It's kinda small number for me, considering he nees a good part of 12 book to be TG.

One theory for next course of action for galad will be allying with Roder Italude because he is the closest anti Seanchan force and by now his plan will be coming into action.
fizban
24th July 2005, 09:56
also possible, though it will be interesting to see if he think putting Ituralde in charge will be the best course of action, he is one of the great general's, after all. there is also the question of whether or not he'll learn of him at all. the last i heard, everyone outside or Arad Domad thought him dead.

Problem is they wont meet it seeams. Galad got it seems 7000 WC with him and is on the run (report of General Galgan to Suroth from KoD prologue which is out and I got it trought non legal ways (trought a webpage where somebody put it). Since such actions are prohibited here I wont post the link. Just a hint. Search Wotmania they may have a theme about this). Iterlude executed his plan and is running towards Arad Doman to lure Seanchan in a trap.

It seems KoD won't be anywhere near 1000 pages.
Here's the official info:
Book details:
ISBN: 0312873077
761 pages, not counting the gloassary
783 pages including the glossary
37 Chapters (Chapter 2: "The Dark One's Touch")
2 new chapter icons
So it goes like this:
Prologue: Embers falling on dry grass 1
1 When Last Sounds 91
2 The Dark One's Touch 119
So some 15,5% has gone to Prol and CH 1.
An I the only one who thinks this is hige procentage.
Ah yes. Nobody reads this thread.
Edit:
Ah yes I forgot this:
The opening epigram is:
The sweetness of victory and the bitterness of defeat are like a knife of dreams. -- from Fog and Steel by Madoc Comadrin

I just finished the book myself about twenty minutes ago. (I bought the book yesterday, read roughly half of it then, and finished it off today)
While I enjoyed the book, does anyone else feel like Jordan...wrote at breakneck speed? I dunno, I feel like it didn't have his usual thouroughness. Of course, some parts were very detailed, but it just seemed to be...brisk. Down to buisness.

I know what you mean, he seemed to have been trying to fit a lot in without actually increasing the book size too much. It can kind of skip from event to event leaving you wondering what happened (i had to re-read a couple of chapters to understand them). But in a lot of ways i think i preferred this to the glacial pace of the last few books, some detail is always nice, but sometimes i think he used far too much.
As a contrast this seems almost the complete opposite, but there were some bits i would have liked a little more detail on, particularly on Rands chapters towards the end. But i guess you can't have everything, overall i'm more than happy with the book :D
Marie Sedai
12th October 2005, 21:11
True. I'm glad I am not that insane yet. I was worried I was the only one who felt this way. Well...I know he wants the series done, and I did enjoy the book. To be honest, I was enjoying his more sedate pace. Oh well, on the positive, I've enjoyed how he's gone through different paces in each book. Though I do feel that Semrihage was um...slighted in her fight with Rand. I mean really...um. Lack of description anyone?
Tel Janin
13th October 2005, 11:16
Definitely. I thought that whole incident was over way too fast and needed more detail. I suppose he must have thought we'd had enough description of her earlier when the forsaken all met up , and in some ways i suppose i liked the slower pace, but i also want this series to finish at some point, so it had to be done :)

i'm guessing he did it for a reason. that reason being, that there have been so many readers complaining about the other books hardly having any action, and the story being drawn out too long, and pretty much demanding that they end with book 12. whether or not that will happen i kinda still doubt, however...i remember him saying in an interview that he was going to do his best to try to get it wrapped up. now sure, there's a happy medium in there somewhere between thoroughness and moving along quickly...he was being too thorough to some people...and he sped up the action...some people will be pleased, and others will be disappointed. yet, that's the nature of things. however, i'm only on page 400 or so...so maybe it gets really breakneck and far over the top soon and i'll feel like a woolhead.
