View Full Version : Fools Fate, Really, really, really big spoilers

OK, so I just finished Fools Fate. And to tell the truth, I was a little disapointed.

Anyone else who's read it will probably agree with me that when you get to page 450ish, it's amazing, masterful even. But it's only halfway through the book. What happened afterwards I can only describe as an Eddings ending.

I mean, seriously, happy ending? Especially such a terribly contrived one? No way was Fitz heading for a happy ending, the best I was hoping for was a "well, it's all over now, I can get on with my life" ending.

NOT a "I get everything I ever wanted and everything is perfect and wonderful" ending. I felt really let down by that. It could've happily ended at the half way mark, but no, it had to go on.

Although this is seeming like I hated it, I didn't really, great book overall, great series' overall, but I couldn't help but have aching teeth from all the sugar by the end of that.

I haven't read that book. Eddings is not a writer I like too much yet when you said big spoilers I was compelled to take a look at what you wrote, apart from it ending happily I don't really see any spoilers in what you have written?

Well, I reckon the fact that I said it ends happily is a fairly big spoiler, but after writing the title of this thread I didn't really want to give all that much away, and was too lazy to go back and change the title.

Sorry, I was in a weird mood when I posted that. I guess it is quite a big spoiler but every Eddings book I've read ends happily so it wasn't a great surprise you saying that this one did. Anyway I apologise for spraffing that.

Warning: Includes big spoilers that are more specific than "It had a happy ending"

I know what you mean about it seemed like it could have ended around page 450. When I got to around there, I was thinking, "There's still 350 pages left?"

The ending was pretty happy since Fitz got almost everything he wanted, but I didn't see it as too happy since getting the good things came with a cost. In order to get back together with Molly, Burrich had to die, which was sad for him (and they had JUST been reunited to). And in order for all the good things to happen that did, he had to lose his best friend, the Fool, who also broke off the link they shared. That was hard for both of them and since the Fool was my favorite character after Fitz, I thought that overshadowed the happiness of the ending somewhat. It made it seem a lot less happy to me anyway. The last three pages or so did make it seem very happy, but I just kept thinking, "Fitz goes through all the trouble of bringing him back to life and then he just leaves because that's the only way he thinks Fitz can have a happy life???"

At least it wasn't as sickeningly happy as the end of Liveship Traders where all the bad guys died and everything worked out for the best. (I loved the trilogy, but the ending was just too good to be true.)
