View Full Version : WOT is ANNOYING!!!!!!

IMHO here, I began to read the WOT books some time ago, and at the time, they were THE best series I've read yet. However, from book 6 on, the story has gone nowhere. The women in there are extremely annoying and shallow in character, as with most of the characters in the story. I think the only thing this series has going for it is the fact that nearly an entire world was created and there is a near endless amount of material that can be remarked about and debated. It's fascinating, but there is no real story and the characters could have drawn up by a kid. Since then, I have read the SoT series and are the best I've read of those type of series. The jokes in Wot are recycled and unfunny. In fact, I'm trying to read book 10, but I can't finish it. It's been like that since the start of book 7. No wonder you people GLEAN all the scraps from the books cause those bits and pieces are the story. The overall saga is not at all good, but I do enjoy those bits and pieces as much as you do.

Obviously, you are not looking at the big Picture. when the series is finished, you will be singing a different song. That is all.

I hope so - but not if he keeps extending the series, I know he loves his money but the last few books have added very little :(

well, while i agree with this....
foreshadowing and buildup is great....but imo it shouldn't be the only thing happening. The first books of WoT were filled with this as well, but they also included action. And i don't just mean physical action. Stuff happened, people went places, accomplished things. CoT is basically ALL foreshadowing and buildup, and i think that even there it doesn't stand up to the previous books. So, yeah, i like WoT, but.....CoT could have been cut down to the beginning half of a real book.

I love the way he builds-up everything!...just not when it's in the point of view of one of the women characters. I agree, they suck. Especially Elayne.

Not only do I like Elayne, But I also like Nynaeve, Faile and Egwene aswell as Aviendha and Cadsuane.

I'm only on book 6, so I'm not sure where the books are going to take me, and I 've heard from alot of people that the books start to drag after Lord of Chaos, but in RJ defense, none of us have ever written a series of books so complex, spellbinding or wonderful as his, and we probably never will. He has his reasons, I'm sure.

*Sheilds her eyes from such blasphemous writing* WoT is great! There was only one not so ood one. Though I will admit that Rand has way too much anger.

I think WOT is still one of the best Fantasy series ever written. You just have to think on a larger scale. Nothing this big has ever been done before, well by one Author anyway. Just read some Eddings. Then you'll appreciate Jordan a whole lot more.

The whole series is only just hanging on with antisipation for what will happen when Tarmon Gaidon comes.
I can't believe this thread was started because someone thought SoT was better than WoT.
WoT isn't the best, its good yes but not the best obviously. LotR and aSoIaF are so much greater in depth and story than WoT but that is because they have had proper endings. We need to wait for the ending to fully judje WoT-you can't say its the best because, it isn't finished yet.
CoT isn't very good because the series main character was put into the background- It is like Matrix without Neo.

While I've only read the first two (or three?) books the of SoT series I'm still going to have to say: Huh!? I bought the first two book on sale and I would have thought that it was wasted money if not for the fact that I really do love to get annoyed. I'm strange that way and it only goes to a point which is the reason that I didn't continue to read the series.
I also feel the need to quote Saaren: " if ya dont liek the books and they are 'crap' why do you bother coming here?"

While I like the story, I feel the later books have gone downhill. Look at the titles for books 1-6. They centre on something that's the main theme of the story:
TEOTW - The Eye
TGH - The Horn
TDR - Rand fulfilling the Callandor & Stone prophecy & finally accepting his status as the Dragon Reborn
TSR - The Shadow gaining more power over Randland
TFOH - Balefire being used extensively
LOC - Everything going to hell/chaos
After that the titles don't focus on anything of importance.
ACOS - Rand gaining rulership of Illian (that's it?)
TPOD - Just a metaphorical saying (how's that for a main theme of a book?)
WH - The weather, & Rand becoming more cold-hearted (what kind of theme is that?)
COT - Sounds like a rephrasal of TSR
The later books seem to be pretty much extensions of each other, except maybe for that big Choedan Kal fight at the end of WH.

I agree a hundred percent. First 6 + Choedan Kal own. The rest... Meh.
Still love the series though.

I admit that i found book ten a struggle to read, although it is left at a cliffhanger, as soon as i finished it i felt so disapionted. I have never stopped reading a book two chapters from the end before.
I still love the series and can't wait for the nxt book

I've been happy with the series all the way through WH. CoT did leave a lot to be desired, but even so, I can see where WH/CoT should set up a lot of action for Dagger of Dreams or whatever the next one is going to be called. But other than WoT and The Belisarius series, I can't think of another series of fantasy books I've ever read. Oooh yeah, The Chronicles of Narnia. That makes 3 fantasy series I've ever read in my life YAY! So I don't have a lot to base a comparison on.

Eh, I made the mistake of reading ten before the next one came out. Suspense over long period of time makes me itchy. Everytime I think about that book I swing my fist and growl in stupid-looking, futile frustration.

I'm on the "It's annoying" side ;-). My feeling is this: yes, it is a good series (at least it was), but if Jordan doesn't end it as quick as possible (now I don't mean that he should let Rand have a heartattack or something like that) but I want a nice, fittingly epic ending, and I want it now!
It's kind of sad when something like this happens, that the series just starts ebbing out just because the author is out of ideas for an ending/too greedy to kill his foremost generator of income.
Enariom
7th June 2004, 06:11
I don't think Jordan is greedy.... I'm more obliged to think that the books and Rand-land just got to big for him.... I mean; he hasn't even started to tell us about the countries on the other side of the waste.... The Dragon Reborn affects all of the world, doesn't he?
I truly hope he doesn't end the series before he has answered all the remaining questions.... That would be awful! :eek5:
I think the reason people find the series annoying is that Robert has seized being an entertainer and started being a lecturer.... The series has become to serious....
But! Being a Brown and all, I can appreciate that ;)

At least I hope Jordan end the series before he dies. Let's pray that's long into the future!

i had a struggle to read the first 18 chapters of CoT, but everything else i found amusing and capturing!!!
"A new spring" was quite good!!!
and since there is 2-3 books left, i think that the last ones will be pretty good since it have to happen a lot in them:D:D

He'd better finish this in two to three books. Egads, I'm going to be out of college by the time the series is finished.

i myself thought the eye of the world was one of the best books i ever read. it alone made me want to finish the series right there. as the books wore on, it seemed like RJ knew where he was going in the series to a degree tho didnt know how exactly he should bridge it in writing. i must say i was not in the least dissappionted with winters heart, bc there is so many parts in that which i enjoy reading over and over. such as the 3-way bonding, and the end, with the cleansing of the taint.
however, if you want my honest opinion, i didnt like 10 in the least. my neighbor read it and hated it, and before i read it, all i got was negative feedback which was prolly engraved in my mind upon myself reading it. but i thought the book had no clear direction. it seemed as tho he knew he had to go somewhere, but didnt know where, with saidin fully cleaned (as far as we know). so to that end, i hope it gets better. bc right now, it has nowhere else to go besides up.
this has been another pious ranting of tom...
SirTom
16th June 2004, 01:58
also, i would like to say that book 11 will be the shit bc CoT ended with the rising action of every storyline. so book 11 will start with all these overdue climaxes that should have been in CoT.
god that sounds wrong...

22nd June 2004, 20:37
Well it's definetly not the best fantasy series i would have to lable that either SoIaF or maybe the wayfarer redemption. The last 3 or 4 books were very slow and had nearly no action. I don't think i'm the only one who wants to see perin fight a trolloc again but it's just not happening. The suspense is nice but that jsut means that tarmon gaidin is going to have to be biblicaly awesome otherwise theres going to be a lot of dissapointed fans, and truthfully a good final battle is very hard to come by.

yep, so its time for this to be brought back from the dead again. just for kicks and giggles.
i've read through all the books...except knife of dreams, i'm only about halfway through so far (but i also think it's been a vast improvement to this point) and anyway...i'll pretty much agree that the series loses alot of steam. after awhile you're just left trying to remember what all you've read and why it even matters at this point. the last few were rather bland, but they've not been outright bad, or i wouldn't have finished them. i liked new spring tho.
right now i'm reading about elayne in KoD...the rest of the book i've wanted to keep reading chapter after chapter. right now, elayne and her problems aren't my main concern and i can't wait to get back to other stuff. i've never been a big fan of her though. other than that, things are all picking back up again after the lull in the last few books.
one other thing i find annoying tho is that it seems like RJ takes up half of the books these days describing every womans more than ample bosom every time she says anything. i mean, that's all well and good, and its not like theres ever anything indecent...i don't mean in like that...it just gets old in my mind. i don't remember him being so fixated on everyone's bosoms in the first few books of the series. to me there's alot bloody more going on in the world of rand to be worried about than that.
anyway...i guess that's my 3 coppers...

Moraine is the absolute coolest character in the books, aside from Mat. I can't wait for the last book.
I even like Elayne. Everyone has become pretty jaded here. KOD really brought back my love for the series and made me realize how much setup was in the previous 4 books. Once the series is complete, you'll see how genius Path of Daggers and Crossroads of Twilight really were.

That a cash-back guarantee? ;)
I haven't read KOD yet, ( *grumbles about not being able to get it in paperback for ages and hardback being ridiculously over-priced!* ) But i have to agree, RJ is a great writer, very intelligent; he knows what we want in a book/series, and I think he made the several -shall we say?- slower, books for a reason...

it's called character development. If the characters didn't change or mature it would make reading very boring.

I to have had a problem getting past book 6, it have a long boring section. But all in all I love the WOT books, and while the characters could have needed a bit more flesh so to speak, the series is wonderful in my opinion. It is my favorite fantasy series.
