I have read most of his work, but I haven't read American Gods yet. As soon as I can find a copy I intend on buying it. Neverwhere was very good and 'Good Omens', which he wrote with Terry Pratchett, is one of the best books I have ever read :)

I really like them. She manages to give the characters who need it the strength that seems right, and she manages to surprise all the way through the last book, even tho there are a few things that are easy to figure out on your own.

I'm surprised that so many people chose the Ender's Saga. I mean, I loved Ender's Game, but every book from then on was not nearly as good. Especially after Ender stopped being the main character
R.A. Salvatore wrote some amazing fantasy, but I honestly cant put him on my last since he RUINED the SW books. After killing Chewie and making a new enemy, they just kept going downhill. Then someone had to kill Anakin Solo...:(

Look at it this way, the hobbits that 'wrote" the story don't know how the magic works. It was supposedly written by Bilbo, Frodo and Sam. None of them knew the slightest bit about magic. So Tolkien kept true to the narrative.

I have to revise my Favorites.
1> Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. (1 and 2)
2> Lord of the Rings
3> Wheel of Time
4>Song of Ice and Fire
5> Discworld Novels.
This is just Fantasy. I'm revising due to a re-read of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. It had been 10 years since I had read them. I have recently read ASOIAF and WOT. Donaldson is my favorite Author. His writing is vastly superior to most everything out there when it comes to realism.
If I included Sci-fi, I would have to list a top 20.

First I have to warn you that I only read the first 3 books of SoT. I just didn't have the patience to go futher. I could right a lot about why SoT sux, but I'm just gonna sum up the major points. It is a boring story, with a lot of ripoffs from other sagas (especially WoT) and the cheesiest characters I have ever seen sice Snowwhite. It does ot have the magnitude of WoT or tSoIaF and the author just doesn't want the story to be put out of it's misery. Cmon, iot should have ended after the second book. Besides, the story is bs, and the characters are not only unrealistic, but also act like their brains are the size of a peanut. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to insult you, just SoT.

Yet you feel qualified to judge the entire series?
It is a boring story, with a lot of ripoffs from other sagas (especially WoT).......
I agree with you on this; the similarities between SoT and WoT are just too blatant to be explained away.
....and the cheesiest characters I have ever seen sice Snowwhite.
You'll certainly have to explain this one, I fear. I actually liked Goodkind's female characters far more than I do Jordan's; Jordan's are just too stereotypical and stupid.
Though SoT certainly nothing to write home about, it isn't as bad as some people try to portray it.

Those are the only for sure top fivers i have atm but i will add later.
And the SoT got incredibly boring after the first 2 or 3 books
Did any of the other old Redwall fans read Brian Jacques other book "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" ?

Did you read Faith of the Fallen. It seemed to revitilize the series for a while. Though I was very disappointed with Naked Empire.

They aren't fantasy, and this isn't the right place to post (maybe?), but I have to ask. :2eyes:

I read that and the 4 next in the "series." Got the two first books as a present, then borrowed the others. I liked them because I like historial novels.(I can't wait to have history as a subject at school again.)

I haven't read too many series except for Harry Potter. I also read a book called "The Fires of Merlin" something like that, and it was really wierd when I first read it, but an amazing, and a long book. I can't wait to read these other book series. They must be really awesome.

Let's see, Not sure how to organize favorites, Oh well, here they are with no priority order, since each author has his weaknesses
1. Shannara/ Magic Kingdom of Landover/ Word and Void series (Terry Brooks)
2. WoT
3. LoTR
4. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (Tad Williams)
5. and...Dune series (well, some of the books were hard to get through, but Herbert's style is awesome)
I'll add to note that His Dark Materials was pretty cool, and New Line is making a movie trilogy of them. Also, I think Memory, Sorry, and Thorn would make an awesome movie, how come no one's tried to get any of that? And a Movie of something by Terry Brooks would be cool, although the screenwriters would have to do something to make the dialogue better than the books. Plus Terry isn't so good at developing love stories.
(I've said the following earlier, but heck, I'll say it again!)
And anyone that's not of Peter Jackson's caliber, as far as it comes to adapting books into movies, is absolutely insane to make a movie out of Wheel of Time. The books are just too complex! It would be interesting to see, but only after a considerable amount of time so the people know what to expect when making a fantasy movie series. There are a lot of promising ones that are coming out in the next few years.
Although, what's the name of the production company that bought the movie rights? (well, you know what group I mean) Are they like "Red Eagle Entertainment"? I think that's a little ironic...Oh well, Tai'shar Manetheran!

No order, can't decide.
Rhapsody Trilogy
Deathstalker Pentology (Is that a word)
Wheel of Time (decology)
Dragonlance Legends
Serpentwar Saga
Emma-Jayde
26th November 2006, 00:30
So, before anybody shoots me for reviving this thread which has been dead quite a while, I just don’t see the point starting a new thread asking the exact same thing as this one. And if I’d done that there surely would be people to complain about it. But what the hey, you can’t please everyone. :p
And hey, if you posted in it 2 or 3 years ago, has anything changed in your ‘top 5’?
So, in no particular order:
- Tolkien (Yeah… They’re…uh… Almost all one series… *shifty eyes* :D )
- Mervyn Peake - Gormenghast
- Anne McCaffrey (I can't separate 3 of her series: The Dragonriders of Pern, The Tower and Hive and The Crystal Singer Trilogy… :umm: ) But not Todd McCaffrey. He should leave Pern alone! :(
- Feist – The Riftwar Saga (Magician, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon) I’ve read most of the others, but I think this first series was by far the best.
- RJ - WoT
Although, I’ve just started Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy, and I can tell I’m going to like this… So that might find a place there in the next couple of weeks. ;)
And I was quite tempted to put Pratchett’s Discworld, Adams’ Hitchhikers’ Guide, and Stephen Donaldson’s series’, but they just don’t fit
UR_VILE_WEDGE
26th November 2006, 09:45
ok, lesseee
1. Thomas Covenant. by Stephen R Donaldson Nothin even comes close.
After that it gets tricky.
2. The Chronicles of Amber, Roger Zelazny.
3.The Eternal Champion, Michael Moorcock. (gah, what a horrible name to have.)
4. WoT RJ. Tis good.
5. I suppose Tolkien can nudge his way in here. LoTR
Arathelle
26th November 2006, 09:56
Emma, of course "Tolkien" can be put into the cathegory "series". :D
In no particular order:
Tolkien
A song of Ice and Fire
WoT
His dark materials
the Hitchhiker-series
And when reading the first page of this thread, I noticed that Lexi mentioned the Bitterbynde-trilogy, that would surely be among the top ten. I just liked it, dunno why. Shannara on the other hand... I hated it when I was twelve, and haven't managed to try it again since then. Sword of truth was good to begin with, but after a while they bored me, the story seemed to follow the exact same lines in every single book and the characters started to bug me off. Maybe I'll try to pick those two up again after exams, just to see what they're like after having avoided them for some time. I've also got Gormenghast at home, wonder why I didn't take that one with me when I moved. :umm:

Geez, I'd forgotten about this thread....
I'll list my current five favorite.
Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson(Really anything by Donaldson gets a vote from me, he's just that good.)
The Discworld by Terry Pratchett
The Dark Tower by Stephen King
The Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman
Number 5 is a tie between A song of Ice and Fire and WOT. Maybe I'm just getting tired of waiting for Both authors.

Song of Ice and Fire (I'm a patient man)

Hagazussa

Mat and Perrin perhaps not, but I would say Rand is a little bit pompous. A farm boy become a rich, famous and mad mage kind of pompous but pompous non the less.

The Sprawl Trilogy refers to the books Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. All three take place on a dystopian future Earth (which I can't say I idolize) over the course of roughly sixteen years and a few familiar characters. His writing style borrows heavily from the beat and pulp genres so if you decide to read the trilogy, be warned - its some of the best writing evar.
