 my brother confessed to me the other day that he wanted to go see the next harry potter movie!!
my brother is an athletic 16 yr old and as far as i know hasnt picked up a book a day in his life except for ones he had to read for class. you can imagine how much of a shock this was to me. to think HE wanted to see a movie about an 11 year old wizard was laughable. if i hadnt heard it myself i wouldnt have believed it.

btw the 1st harry potter movie is coming to ppv this weekend and i plan on making my whole family watch it. i have already announced this but i am not sure they beleived me....

:umm:

just felt like sharing :D

We all like Harry Potter here . I would recommend the dvd version though it has a bunch of extras. My 6 year old has started reading the books so i'd imagine we will be going to the next movie again on opening night. :) Hehe parents always use their kids as an excuse to see childrens movies. Even though i dont think harry potter is that childish of a series. :D

I still cannot understand how any adult can enjoy thse books?

My girlfriend at what point loved them so she made me read them; I was a few hundred pages into book 4, we broke up, and I havent loojked at it since.

Yes, I can understand why a child would enjoy them and yes, I understand why this is good for the genre as a whole, getting many many people to begin reading Fantasy, and for that matter, to begin reading in general.

But I find the books childish and unbelievable. As an adult, I am truly confused why any other adult would find these books enjoyable. I do not say this as a rant, I say this merely because I do not understand.

lol tr. i bought it yesterday :D
so are you saying your brother ended up liking them?
(you have to excuse him aragorn, hes form england ;) )

:furious:
~kills berk in the face for inderectly calling her childish~

j/p :p
well....people (including adults) like the books because they are fun and light and since they deal with our world as we know it and not just some other place where they are stuck in the middle ages they find it interesting and a good escape for whatever troubles they have, even if it is only a short while.

yes, i also say you are stuck in being an adult :)

btw, i made my parents watch it and they liked it. :) my brother escaped however, he is alot stronger than me and i wasnt able to bar the door properly :( so he was able to get away to the movies with his friends. they went to see reign of fire. i doubt it was better than harry potter *sniff*

:D

despite any hype and commercialism that has come with the books... when it comes down to it... the books are very well written, they're light-hearted, charming and fun.. the series is no more than a mature fairytale, and it's story telling at its best.

Mann
14th July 2002, 16:58
Hey! At least we speak English!

I quite liked the books. Isn't there a new one coming out shortly?

Aragorn
14th July 2002, 19:26
Well, I somewhat disagree with them being well written. I put them on the same level as Dragonlance - a good enjoyable story, but not great literature.

Sorcerian
14th July 2002, 21:55
What is "great literature"? Old, moldy, so called classics like Catcher in the Rye and other dead author writings? Anything that keeps me entertained and has at least a semblance of structure is great literature as far as i'm concerned. From Stephen King to James Harriot(non-fiction All things great and small) its all great.

wendy
15th July 2002, 09:45
I find them extremely well written because the reader can picture exactly whats going on. She sets up a world which we're a part of and deals with the most natural aspects of human nature in a very direct and realistic way. A friend of mine has his own theory on why they are so good. He points out they take the reader exactly to a place they want to be, instead of building us up with a great beginning and then degenerating as the author gets bored and loses track of their own story, like so many books nowadays. Instead Rowling delves into the most self-indulgent aspects of stories unabashedly. Popularity! Freindship, heroism. She leaves no avenue she introduces unexplored and her characters are all so realistic instead of interchangeable. All of them remind me of someone I know. Its all so satisfying as a read. Harrys experiences are something the child in all of us (if it still lives) would love to experience!!! And she makes these vicarious experiences extremely worthwhile, always coming through with just the right mixture of adventure and reality and fantasy to make Harry accessable as not only an escape, but a way to involve and relate yourself to the novel. Who here has already decided what house they would like to be in? And which characetr they are most like? And which one they like the most etc? How much fun is that? :D

Elin
15th July 2002, 12:23
Hmm... I've read half the first book (and it wasn't because I didn't like it that I didn't finish it - I was on a bus from Prague and borrowed it from someone else on the bus, so I had to give it back). Anyway, I thought it was a good light read. I didn't enjoy the movie that much when I saw it on video - I thought it was too predictable in some sense, and yes, a bit childish. I do have a friend who really dislikes Harry Potter because he thinks it is stereotypical - e g the fat kid (in Harry's stepfamily) is also the bad and spoiled kid, etc.

Instead Rowling delves into the most self-indulgent aspects of stories unabashedly.

Hehe... this is the reason why I like Laurell K. Hamilton and anime, among other things. I have rather a hedonistic attitude to reading sometimes... :)

PS Going off on a tangent, wouldn't the Anita Blake series be great as an anime? Just occured to me...

Arawis
15th July 2002, 14:16
ooh! i have wendy, i have! id be in Ravenclaw and i am most like hermione (though without the snobbishness) cuz im such a perfectionist! :p and i always do my work and such :) (tho, perhaps i am a mix between hermione and the twins cuz when im around my friends i can go crazy! ;) )

see, wendy said it better than me, but thats what i was trying to get at :)

Mann- the 5th book was supposed to come out this year but, i dunno, something about shes behind schedule, it might still come out before christmas, but it also is likely that it wont come out till the summer of '03 :(

and i agree, the movie wasnt as good as the book (though i still liked it  ) but isnt this always the case? :)

talyn rahl
15th July 2002, 14:57
ooooh wots the address for the Harry Potter person quiz thingy?

Mann
15th July 2002, 18:11
I'd end up in Ravenclaw, and drive the profesors to dispair.

I agree Anita Blake would make a good anime. I like the fast flowing style. A nice light read. (And the sex is plot related; it really bugs me when a book has gratuitous sex).

LOL I did one of those tests and it says I am Ron Weasely. thats probably accurate, I have always imagiend myself a sidekick type and I'm definately goofy. Although I can get all haughty like Hermione too I guess, but I'm not exactly into studying most of the time. I'm always curious about everythign though, so I'd probably be in Ravenclaw too!! WHOOOOJ!!!! GO RAVENCLAW.

And Elin, the thing about stereotypes is that they're so often true...

hehe there is also a test its "Who is you dream guy?" or some such and mine was fred and george :D

yes, i agree Cs.

PS: dont you think it funny, fred and george are older than ron and harry, but in the movie, their voices are higher :D not that that makes them any less cool....

lol.. professor snape.. i think there's definitely something sexy about the tall dark stranger.. he's the tragic figure, who's misunderstood..

actually the portrayal of snape in the movie is exactly how i've always envisioned heathcliff from wuthering heights to look like..

Arawis
21st July 2002, 14:19
yes, sirius is total cool, and so is lupin (tho not as cool as sirius)
im not sure who is gonna do it, but here is a list of those rumored to being considered for the cast of PoA

http://www.angelfire.com/mi3/cookarama/azknews.html

talyn rahl
21st July 2002, 20:08
Dude i think if they cast any of those people in those roles im gunna boycott the film they all SUCKED BADLY

Arawis
22nd July 2002, 01:34
i dunno....im still going for ewan mcgregor as lupin, tho that christian bale guy looks like he could be it too....he looks kinda wolfish :D
then ronan vibert and robson green look like they could play sirius, (im leaning more toward robson green) but that other guy is just too fat :p jejeje

talyn rahl
22nd July 2002, 14:32
I think if sirius black is cast as robson green i'll hunt down the casting agents and shoot them repeatedly, he is quite possibly the worst choice in the world

i ment they would be the worst choice ever it was a continueance, and i think he's to wimpy and mincey to play sirius i just can't see him as a hardend murderer who has spent the last 12 years in the most feared prison in the intire wizard world. he to crap

Arawis
22nd July 2002, 18:37
hmm......i was just talking baout how he looks, ive never seen any of his movies and such............

talyn rahl
23rd July 2002, 13:38
you haven't seen any of his film coz he's not a film actor he's a crappy tv drama actor but there one small problem, he can't act, he's crap, and he looks like a mincer you need someone who looks hard, someone who looks capable of murder, i don't know maybe its just me being stupid but i thin he is about as far from right as is possible to be.
but ewan mcGregor for Lupin could be cool, he's quite a good actor

Arawis
23rd July 2002, 13:51
~nods~ as long as you agree with ewan for lupin ~nods~

:p ;) :D

Christy Sedai

I guess Ewan would be okay. If Hugh Jackman were a bit more british he would be a good choice. After all he is Wolverine. I hope I spelled that right. :)

Arawis
23rd July 2002, 15:19
lol Cs. :) wolverine is cool, but my favorites were always gambit and jubilee :D jejeje.
dont go by ewan's pisture on that page tho...it isnt a good one. i still say either him or if he cant do it then christian bale. ~nods decisively~

Mann
23rd July 2002, 16:20

Mann
26th July 2002, 16:45
Snickity Snick, just call me Wolverine.

talyn rahl
27th July 2002, 11:37
Cyclops is crap he has no control over his power, thats rubbish, wolverine and gambit are the best, little question, Gambits power is that he can positivly charge stuff yeah, so if he charged a negitivly charged thing would it become nuetral or wot?

Snick de snick de snnnooorrrrttt

talyn rahl
30th July 2002, 13:47
well when i re-read PoA i had a cool theory for a happy harry end o' series.
when they made peter a secret keeper they didn't actually give him the real location, they gave him a location of two people who where using the polyjuice potion to look like them, and HARRY is the real secret keeper who knows the real location, but he has to be kept in the dark about it because if he knew then voldemort could read it from his mind, that why at the end of book 1 when Harry askes why Voldemort wants him dead, and he doesn't say coz he doesn't want him to know :) i know its silly but i could happen

I'm really late seeing as everyone's gone off topic, but I'll say what I wanna say anyways.
I've read the first two Harry Potter books and admittedly I do think they are quite lighthearted and pleasant to read, but I still think they're highly over-rated. I lot of people say how J K Rowling is a genius, but I think a lot of the great stuff she does are flukes. I'm planning a fantasy series of my own, which I hope to get published, and I find that a lot of really good twists and character developments that I create happen just conveniently and are just flukes most of the time.

i don;t know about the US but in the UK they releasd a special 3 1/2 hour version with bits that had been taken out to cut the film down, it well worth seeing again.
and yeah im talkin aboot the first HP it SUCKED arse seriously.
was Wizard of Oz good, did you remember your lines ETC.

Arawis
26th November 2002, 19:40
oh, i didnt see that one

i didnt have any lines, i was in the chorus. i was a munchkin, a dancing poppy (as opposed to a singing poppy) a jitterbug (this scene was cut from the movie), and a manicurist (from the scene where they go to the Emerald City, i was one of the people who 'freshened up' the lion)

but yeah, it was pretty good, except on opening night the fog machine made the fire alarm go off (we were hoping that wouldnt happen during the show) but nobody in the audience reacted so it was ok, we didnt even stop. then on saturday a bunch of things were going screwy (ex: total power outage on the stage lights for a few minutes) and scott (student director) and the main director were freakin out walkign down the hall saying if they heard anyone say the scottish king play that person would never be in another play at the school.
but all in all, it wasnt too shabby

mann, i dont know what you are talking about, but do you mean Macbeth? cuz if you do your right, i dont know if you were making a joke or something....

muaha! i went and HP today!! i was a little worried cuz they had to cut out so much stuff from the book that the movie seemed rushed in the plot so i couldnt really enjoy it, but then toward the end it got better and i was happy :) and dan and tom were just REALLY cute in it :D i think they are cute ;)

oh, and i also bought Shadow of the Hegemon (ender series) so im finally gonna read it :D teehee im excited :p

Mann
4th December 2002, 07:39
Hmmm. The third one should be interesting...

...they're just starting production and I wonder how they're going to cope with the actor playing Dumbledore dying? (Also, the cast hitting puberty).

val7
5th December 2002, 17:01
Well, in the books they're around 13, so they should be anyway.

*wonders who will replace richard harris for dumbledore*

talyn rahl
6th December 2002, 08:43
Probably Ian McCellan (SP?) aka Gandalf, he an old man that looks kinda wizardy, he'd be the next best thing

Mann
6th December 2002, 13:01
He doesn't conjure the same image as Richard Harris though.

That's fine for the girls, but the boys won't be hitting puberty at 13.

talyn rahl
16th December 2002, 14:02
yeah but out of everyone else in the world hes prolly 2nd best

talyn rahl

everyone probably already knows but for those who don't Micheal Gambon has taken over the role of Prof Dumbledore, hopefully he'll do well, coz the next film is an important one.

hey talyn rahl i really like your avy

ya i was ticked about sirius but it adds to the story
it has to be a trial we don't really want to read about this
invincible good guy who just wins by default there has to be struggle gain and loss

Night_Daughter

I remember reading something about her killing him because she had a fit of depression! Why couldnt she kill off someone else, maybe Malfoy, or maybe Dudley! Its like how RJ tried to off Moraine! that was sad:cry: ! If RJ doesn't bring Moraine back and decides that he really is dead, I'll sue! I know I'm off topic so back to what I was saying. She shouldn't have done that!

ClimberMan
7th November 2003, 18:50

lan sam
7th November 2003, 19:18
Don't you poeple get it!?!?!?! They died exactly the same way!!!!! Finally, RJ did somehting original!!!!!!

Byrn
7th November 2003, 19:29
As original as Gandalf dying and coming back? You do know Gandalf actually died, right?

Night_Daughter
7th November 2003, 19:36
If you look closely, almost all Fantasy books are alike in some way. Sometimes its not direct, like book A has certain ideas that are very similar to book B which is almost a complete copy of book C except for an origional part which is the part that book A "borrowed".

Harry Potter is a decent read. Of course I've encountered worse and better. I had to keep reminding myself it was for a younger audience though, as I sloshed through the stereotypes. I didn't finish it either; I bowled straight through books one and two, struggled through three, then went to a stuttering halt. Unfortunately I'm ambivalent at best in finishing it, but I still may, and I enjoyed what I read. *sheepish* I'll admit that I still read Harry Potter fanfiction, normally Snape based, but the actual series I hadn't touched in about a year.

I love the books, and the movies! My bf can't stand the thought of me wanting to go see the 3rd Harry Potter movie, so he refused to go with me when it comes out.....Darn it....at least I have a best friend that loves the movies! :D

talyn rahl
13th January 2004, 06:22
i loved all five books but so far the movies have just pissed me off :( i hope they don't masacre the new one to much, all I've heard so far is that the wear track suits alot and they've given Sirius tattoo's over hsi whole body............. Oh well there's always the next one
;)

Lady Damodred

Really?

Theoban
13th January 2004, 17:15
I don't think it'll be able to massacre this new film, as there's a good director at the helm at last, and Gary Oldman is Sirius, and he can do no wrong.

Rockworm
13th January 2004, 17:53
guess im the only one who liked both the books and movies

Lady Damodred
14th January 2004, 20:21

talyn rahl
19th January 2004, 07:17
yeah it should he alright as ong as they don't screw around with it to much, they've had to take a lot out of the other two books and they were about half as long :S so how the hell are they gunna make this not LoTR and still keep true to the books?
