Nynaeve's braid pulling

In my Abnormal Psychology class I learned that there is a term for obsessive hair pulling: Trichotillomania. I'd say that Nynaeve would be a classic example of this particular problem. ;)

While feeling clever, Illustrious laughs in a deranged and sinister fashion: "Muhahahahaha Muhahahaha"
He then proceeds to accidently fire a beam of balefire at his toe, blasting himself back twenty seconds.
G.W.I.N.N.A. reappears.

I've always wondered about Nynaeve, I mean, I refuse to accept her hairpulling as merely an expression of her exasperation with others. There must be some deeper psychological root to it all...

Any thoughts? What would cause a person to excessively pull on their braid? Childhood trauma? An inherent need to grab something?
