new chat script

Just added a new script to deal with chat. This ones keeps a list of who's in chat and displays that on the forum index page, in the box at the top.

It's a bit premature, since the new script isn't ready yet, and has some bugs in it here and there. But for some reason the normal script refused to work, so I had to do something.

One important thing to remember about the new script:
when you're done chatting, close the window. If not, then you remain visible in the "who's chatting" thing, even if you browse to other sites.

If you notice anything funny, let me know please. I don't know all the bugs yet

Well, good news. The new chat script is coming along fine now. Still need to do some testing, rewriting some parts and cleaning up code. But it should be finished within the next couple of days :)

It works like it should, for most. For those of you who feel brave enough to give the thing a try, here's the url (for now):

Remember that you'll need to close the window when you leave chat, so don't browse further with that window. If you don't close that window then your name will remain visible in the Who's Chatting list

Some extra's in this beta:
* configurable Text Color via Popup Color Dialog
* configurable font sizes and such (Right click in the chat screen for options)
* private messaging via Popup Dialogs (Double click on a user's name to popup a private message session)
* Subrooms are now shown in a simple pulldown menu (no longer a list component)
* Popup Emoticon Menu (Right click on text input box to use)

Some bugs may be found. If you do, report them please here in this thread :)


Oh! Something I forgot. This new chat room is not the same as the regular one, so don't expect to find people in here that are in the regular room. But eventually we'll move to this one.

Hey Mike,

I stopped in the new chat, thing are looking good. one thing that may be nice are deafult colors for the color pallet. It can get annoying switching the bars up and down. I like the drop down emoti-icon things. Nice stuff.

can we change the background color...all that white hurts my eyes. And the text color only works locally. Maybe a resizable float...But other than that, It's really cool.

I already changed the colors, but apparently not enough. Will change them some more ;)

The text color only works locally, just as the font sizes. It's just for your own view.
Maybe it's something we can suggest, just as long as people can also ignore other people's colors. I wouldn't want my chat screen turned into a Christmas tree, hehe

The sizing thing is someting I'm still working on. Right now you can't change the default size.

the new chat is beautiful Mike, but when I type really long strands of important gossip, the beginning gets cut off when I press enter! there seems ot be some sort of limit on how much you can type in a line and it seriously limiting my storytelling!!! :)

it did the same thing to me. the new chat clears the whole everything you wrote if you reach the max string lenght.

Hmm, well, don't make too long sentences :D

Oh, and I've synchronized the smilie farm with that of the forum, so don't get :confused: if you type a smilie and it doesn't show up in chat. Odds are you have to type something else to show that smilie :rolleyes:

the chat script has been changed to what will be it's final version.
There shouldn't be any problems, but if you notice someting odd, then yell :)

More features will be added in time to integrate chat further into the forums

But I mean get it to work with PM's, and I don't know what else can be put in it. That sort of things :)
