Now i don't know about going around touting that TB is the best fantasy writer......buuut, i do enjoy reading his books and would recommend them to almost anyone who enjoys fantasy.

There is also a companion book for the TB's Sword of Shannara series called The world of Shannara.

Terry Brooks was good when I was 16 and didn't know any better. His stuff is ok...kinda like Goodkind and Feist, but best writer ever??? I REALLY like Elfstones of Shannara. It's the best of the bunch, in my opinion.

I liked the First King better than the others actually, they were all really good though. Not the best i've read but definatly top 5. Good enough to be reread over and over and. ect....
The Running w/ the Deamon are good too, really liked those.

Waiting for next book makes Radar angry, angry:mad:

My favourite Terry Brooks ones were Wishsong and Elfqueen, but in hindsight I think thats because I read them first, because all his books are generally a rehashed plot of one or the other. He's very enjoyable.

I love Terry Brooks! He's my favorite author, followed by probably Jordan and Tolkien. You must read Brooks, it's totally worth it.

Ummm....I just bought the First King of Shannara. Are you saying this is not the first one? In the cover it lists it as the first one.

Arawis

the sword was published first but first king is a prequel, its set a long time before sword but when you read it alot of things click in your head, well it wont do that for you cuz you havent ras the rest of the series, but when you do youll understand alot of it ~nods~

Has anyone noticed that the Shannara series is just the exact same book with the names changed around a little? It's like Terry Brooks went into Win Word and used the find/replace feature to change the character's name. Story stays exactly the same.

"I've got the sword of Shannara, but I don't know how to use it!"

"I've got the elfstones, but I don't know how to use it!"

"I've got the wishsong, but I don't know how to use it [correctly]!"

ect, ect ...

Uh....not exactly quirky. But i do admit that it does seem quite similar. Please don't judge Brooks just by his shannara series. He does have another series that's very different and quite enjoyable. His Demon series. If you want something different from Brooks, check that out.

Running with the Demon? Yeah, I read that one. And Knight of the Word (I think that was it ... ) and then the ending Angel fire East. Read those, they were pretty cool. :)

He did a book signing for Talisman of Shanara, at the the store I worked in. I was able to get him to sign my collection up to that point, plus I nabbed the promo poster board for Talisman and got that signed as well.

Apparently, rumor has it that he will write at least one more book. This one tying the Knight of the Word series with the Shannara series. I had originally heard that he meant to tie Landover in with it as well, though I'm not sure exactly how that would work, since I haven't read much from that series.

BEST ever?????!!!!

I suggest you read more then :o

On my current (and fractional) book shelves I see;

David Gemmell,
Robin Hobb,
Janny Wurts,
Anne McCaffrey,
Ursula K LeGuin,
George R.R Martin,
Raymond E. Feist,
Robert Jordan,
J. R R Tolkien,
Tad Williams,
Orson scott Card,
Robert Silverberg

The latter two are more sci-fi admittedly, though they often get labelled fantasy anyhow - but with the possible exception of Geroge R. R Martin they are all better than Terry Brooks - I mean the Landover novels are more than a little simplistic and the druid ones just seem dull to me....

Robin Hobbs, David Gemmell and Ursula le Guin are well worth reading, you will probably change your mind over whose the best after reading them :p

Meh, Brooks will always have a place on my self for giving me such good entertainment when I was little. I mean, SoIF is a little graphic for an elementary school kid...

I've read most of those authors but haven't heard of Ursula le Guin. What books does she write?

My fave TB books are:
Wishsong of Shannara
Elfstones of Shannara
and the Druid of Shannara

I think TB is one of the best fantasy writers out there but i wouldnt classify him as the best...

Still if he was named the best i wouldnt disagree....

I never really liked wishsong. Elfstones is definitely my favourite though. Mostly because the Reaper rules so much :D

Actually, Total Recall was based on a short story named "We can remember that for you wholesale." by Phillip K. Dick. Terry Brooks wrote the novelization of the movie. Big difference. They made the movie based on a good story, then he watched the movie and wrote a crummy book.

I actually tried to read "Sword of Shanara" but vomited about a hundred pages into it and threw it away soon after.

Terry Brooks is by far not the best fantasy writer. He is quite alot closer to being the worst writer ever in any genre. His plots are derivative and his characters are lacking any individuallity. I compare him to a 3rd rate R.A. Salvatore, who is himself a 2nd rate copy of Michael Moorcock, who is a superior fantasy author.

Garet Jax is and will be one of the coolest characters to ever grace the pages of Terry Brook's books:

I think Garet Jax would have beaten the Reaper
