Alright, I'll admit, my view point is slightly altered by the fact that I recently made a trip to

http://www.members.tripod.com/~wotiscrap/

If you haven't visited it, you shoud. Even if it does relentlessly hack on WOT.

It really did change my perspective on WOT, though. I'd have to say that it would have been better as a, six book series instead of 13(?).

RJ created an entire world of new possibilities. WOT isn't a story of just one adventure, but of an entire world. Maybe RJ extended the story to make more money, or maybe he extended it to make a new type of fantasy story....

My question is, 'is this the future of fantasy?'

books that outline an entire world, not just one part of a world? It is difficult to get involved in too many 'world' fantasies, like WOT. Whereas, you can get involoved in many single adventure worlds....

It would be unfortunate if all the fantasy we see from now on was like WOT, an entire world, rather than a single adventure...

Maybe, i'm just rambling.... but i'm interested to find out what others think of this...

well i didn't go to the site...yet...but from my perspective on fantasy is that it is really not moving towards the "world" type. So i personally don't think that we have to worry too much about the future of fantasy...it'll always be there because some people are always going to want to read it, and authors are going to write what people want to read (hey they like money just as much as we do) So if people want to read more 'single-adventures' more than 'world' ones, there'll be more of them, and vise-versa.

Though i agree with you on that there can be only so many "world" fantasies that you can involve yourself in before you go crazy. But really, i've only read of 4 (WOT / SoT / Shannara / Lord of the Isles) There are probably more, but those are the only "on-going" epics that i've read and focus on the entire "world" rather than just an adventure or two.

~~well i'm off to that site...hopefully my dreams and aspirations won't be crushed too badly...~~

Oh, and rambling RULES!! ;)

LT, you've been to that site! Remember when I posted it up a while back?

And if you thought his Wheel of Time site was funny, you should see his anit-Sword of Truth site. Very funny.

Oh, I've seen more pages like that. Some are quite funny :)

I think that the future for Fantasy is very bright indeed. Sure, there will be more big series written. There already is. But there will be more Fantasy novels in total written too. And published. What does it matter if there are 10 or a 100 more WOT type serieses made, you don't have to read them! Heck, you may never even hear about any of them. And there will be thousands of non WOT type novels written too. Just look at the fantasy movies that are made now; They are making records in how many people are going to the movies to watch them. Think about how many that see these movies, read the books. Think of how many of these people start to dream of becoming fantasy writers themselves. Some will and some of these will be great writers. Those that don't will atleast expand the market for fantasy novels which will give more fantasy writers a chance to publish their works. For Fantasy Fiction, things are looking good indeed!

I think the fantasy world is a wonderful experience. The more the merrier. Just think of how disappointing it is when your favorite book ends...

Or the joy of immersing yourself in a different world...

I personally hope RJ makes many more books, I'm re-reading the WOT again and as many times as I read it I can still feel Rand's pride and smile and laugh out loud.

I can actually say that sometimes I apply my fantasy world into my real world (not in any crazy way)... I imagine the wheel of time turning; weaving patterns in the threads of life all around me...

OK, ok I admit it I love WOT!!!

Well I don't think that dude's arguments are worth a crap anyway. He stopped reading before the books started on their down ward spiral, I myself am glad the story isn't done, cause then I would have nothing to look forward to now. I mean I haven't found a good new fatasy novel in a long time, The last one I really got into was Lord of the Isle, but it couldn't maintain my interest for long.
