Or is that Arakkis? Anyway, we all know that WoT shares many similarities with the Dune series, but what if Randland is actually Arrakis? Not only is there talk of spaceships, but a sort of knife-fighting using one poisoned knife that mimics the gladiatorial combat of Dune and the shocklances might be lasguns...
A friend of mine, known, I believe, as AlthronondorAstchel, mentioned this to me, and I think it holds pretty well.
Also, can anyboy remember any of the dead heroes besides Hawking, Birgitte, and Gaidal Cain?

There are always bound to be similarities. Personally, I've never read Dune (seen the latest looong movie though) so I can't make comparisons from my own experiences. I know that RJ himself denies any similarities to be purly coincidental though. I believe he's said that he's not even read the Dune series.

Shivan the Hunter and Calian the Chooser.
Oh yeah, that's right... I remember I thought those must be Shiva and Kali.

And now I present...
Mat Cauthon and the Horny Heroes Band!

Artur Hawking - Piano
Birgitte (Silverbow?) - Bass
Gaidal Cain - Drums
Rogosh Eagle-Eye - Alto sax
Shivan the Hunter - Tenor sax
Calian the Chooser - Bari. sax

Mat Cauthon and the Horny Heroes will appear in a future fanfic, but I don't know when I'll get around to writing it. I've already got personalities of many characters down, but I don't have any scenes developed yet. I suppose I'll post some updates sometime on the general discussion board.

I have to admiot that suprises me. I always assumed he'd taken inspiration from it the way he admits to taking inspiration from Lord Of The Rings. The similarities go beyond co-incidence, maybe there is something along the lines of a social influence inspiring both Herbert and Jordan to come up with such similar systems.

well, it can't possibly be an intention of RJ's to be an extension of the Dune world, becuase then he would run into all sorts of copyright problems, etc. i do think the dune theory is interesting, and have read a lot about it. granted, the main stories could be explained away with the whole christ/martyr/farm-boy theme that is in almost every fantasy book, but what about the striking similarities between Aiel and the desert people (its been a long time since i read dune)? there just seem to be too many similarities to my liking, too.

I don't know what every one's talking about, Dune and Wot aren't that similar, I mean the only things that are kind of similar are the Aiel and the Fremen, and that's just cause their desert fighting people, and Bene Geserit and Aes Sedai are only alike in that they are a group of witches other than that I really don't see that much.
Besides their story lines are very different and that would seem to be the most important part anyway

Yurian Stonebw was a false Dragon, and there is no evidence that he is a Hero of the Horn.
Here's a thought....Can any of the Heroes channel? I've not seen an example yet.

well, if you count him....lews therin is tied to the horn...at least, it seems likely that he is, even though we haven't seen it explicitly, he is definitely tied to the wheel like the heroes are.
