So, does anyone have any theories about what role Shara is going to play in future books? Most of the information on it seems to be found in the guide...so I'm not sure if it's backround information, a bonus foreshadowing that Jordan decided to give to people who read the World of RJ's Wheel of Time, or just stuff to fill the pages so that he wouldn't have to reguritate everything that has already been said twice in the novels.

Just to start of everything that was said about Shara in the World of RJ WOT is in the books, mostly when Graendal is showing off her servants to sammuel she explains about how the run things in Shara.

But to continue a good idea i will take something else from World of WOT. According to that book the ability to channel is a recesive gene. This means that in Shara they have been breading channelers to become stronger and stronger. They are pure blood channelers and while they are probably untrained their raw power is incredible. To venture a guess I would say both the forces of the light and the dark are going to try to win over the Shara as they could be a huge addition to either side.

One peice of information that is only in the WORJWOT is that Shara have always denied they have had any conflicts with trollocs or other agents of the dark. Yet they share a border with the blight some this is seamingly immposible. Either they are so strong all attacks have instantly been repelled, they have already sided witht he dark, or they have honestly had no battles. We do not know enough to even guess at which answer is correct but when we find out it could completely change how Shara interacts with every one else.

RJ's definately holding Shara as a trump card. Cant wait till he plays it! He definately likes holding stuff like that back - like Cadsuane & the whole Moiraine being "assumed dead" thing & lots of other stuff. But that's part of what I love about his writing. Plenty of stuff to speculate about, super complexities & there's a "Holy S#*%!!!" in every book!;)

Shara is never going to be played... Its just some foreshadowing by RJ. Lol this is an old post... i was just surffing around and found this one.

RJ's said before he might use Shara, but then again he might not. There's plot lines that would work there, but he might introduce them differently.

Oh, by the way: A reccessive gene wouldn't neccesarilly have anything to do with the strength of chanelers (and they haven't been selecting for that anyway), only their quantity. You've got to remember that's its a double reccesive (at least, or the population figures don't pan out), that only determines potentia. People can't look at genotype, just phenotype, hindering their efforts. The structure of the chanellers villages also leads to a chronic shortage of males, meaning reduced breeding potential. I'm really tired right now, but will be happy to take this to quite some depth.

Errrr.... who's Shara again? What book?

Shara is the most frequent name given to the lands beyond the Aiel Waste.

I seem to remember Rhuarc saying that the Asharan'a where fighting a civil war over whether or not Rand was the Dragon Reborn or not, I imagine that if they are introduced then they will make themselves known to Rand. It's stated over and over again that Rand must unite the world before he can fight TG. I would be disappointed if they where not introduced.

where does it say shara breeds strong channelers? i mustve missed that.............

Mann
4th August 2002, 15:19
It doesn't. It's an assuption based on the cloistering of male channelers as breeding stock; and people not understanding genetics.

TimGoldenboots
5th August 2002, 18:50
Well, there is a civil war going on there, but if it is over the knoledge that the Dragon is reborn or some other reason has not been throughally explained... Not much rumor really escapes that land since no outsiders are allowed into their lands.

As for the strength in channelers, it should be known that the lands where channelers are more likely to breed have produced stronger channelers than the main Randland where Aes Sedai seldome breed. Look at the Two Rivers producing Egwene and Nynaeve... then look at the Seafold and the Aiel where they have some who are even stronger than Nynaeve. It is unclear of demane are allowed to breed, but they treat them like horses in every other respect so it is always a posibility that Alivia is a second or third generation demane... And Suldam certainly would be allowed to breed.

The traders probably told the shara traders about the DR.

Makes you wonder about the people in the land of madmen.

No, the maths doesn't work for getting stronger channelers where they breed. You just get more. In that sample you MAY get some strong chnellers, or MAY spot them if their more frequent, but it doesn't pan out biologically to havve them, stronger.

Well, this whole genetics shit is very dependable: it depends if channeling is a dominant gene or not. Such as dark hair/dark eyes are.

Two people bang a few times and have two kids. The mother has dark hair/eyes, while the dad has fair hair/eyes. One might have Dark hair and eyes too, while the other kid might have fair eyes and hair... or one has dark hair and light eyes, or light hair dark eyes..... but usually the dominant gene enforces its trademark. So, if channeling is a dominant gene, then there will be more channelers.... now to the strenght of the channeling--thats evolution, not genetics. I personally think that most of the important characters that are strong channelers are reborn Aes Sedai, or something... cuz like Egwene will just suddenly do something, and she has not leard it yet or she cant remember how she did it... Same with Mat, he has all those memories. Anybody know what the f*ck im talking about?

Kolo al'Jaden

Its heredity(sp). Using a punnets square you could find out the probiblity of having a blue eye kid. Its all cool science.

Mann

No punnet squares become really unwieldly if you add a third or forth variable, and don't take allele positioning into account.

Channelling would have to be at least a double reccessive for only two to three percent of the population to have such an advantage. (Three thousand years doesn't signify as an inhibitor). This doesn't ake account of wilders or learners. it's far more likely to be three reccesive genes, requiring two to learn, three to be automatic (although four in three positions is also possible), with one non-expressing combination. Strength is likely to be based on allele positioning (although this is frankly a guess).

In this case the strength of channelling will be dependant on genetics in evolution (intraspecies competition).

Kolo al'Jaden

True that...

I recall Jordan saying that Mat's memories aren't from past lives. When he went into the ter'angreal in Rhuidean, one of the things he said, not knowing the rules there were different than in in the other ter'angreal was that he wanted the holes in his memory filled up, meaning he wanted to recover his own memories. In this ter'angreal it wasn't asking questions and getting answers, It was making bargains for what you want. What he got was memories from the people on that side of the ter'angreal from lots of men from long ago

Shara has to play a part in the books eventually. This not a strugle with just one land against the dark lord, but the whole world as it is in the book. Also, Rand has got the bug in his ear about the civil war there over him, and he will not just sit back and let people kill each other over him without trying to stop it. thats just the way he is. I for one am really looking forward to getting a look at Shara.

Mat never had memories before he went into the ter angreal. He never knew what he was spouting out it was as moraine said the old blood coming out again. he wasn't doing it consciously realy.

The damane aren't allowed to breed. In Winter's Heart Tuon says how disgusting it is that some men try to have sex with damane- much as its disgusting to have sex with a sheep. Of course its possible that a few damane could have kids as the result of a rape, but I don't think it would be a convention.

The sul'dam might be allowed to have children though.

A wombat is a small critter that lives in Aussie. Kinda like a raccon but without all the fur on the tail.

Oh, cousin Steve.... he's nice :) Bit of a pain when he was a teen though....

Wallabies are 'like' kangaroos but usually smaller.
Wombats are a bit like badgers, but they are marsupials, and are brown in color.
And they are meaner and crankier than badgers.
And they are NOTHING like raccoons....

And Koalas look cute, but really are evil. They ate all the squirrels here in Australia.
At least they're not as bad as Drop Bears.
~shudder~
