1. Were they consious when they were sealed up all those years, or were they in some sort of susupended animation (except for Ish, of course)

and

2. When they did get out, how did they learn the "modern tongue", so well, as quickly as they did?

I think they were all concious... maybe sleeping type of thing but definatly not suspended animation....

and I could be wrong on this but wasn't the modern tongue being used in the last age.... or am I insane.... and if it wasnt then they are constantly talking into a universal translator type of thingy :)

I think that someone probably has to ask RJ about this at some sort of book signing, but the things that we do know some things. E.g. I think that it was Lanfear that reflected (in her own head) that being sealed in the bore was a "dreamless sleep" ("even Trollocs dreamed", only Myrdrals were denied dreams). The problem that I instantly thought of when I read this in the books was the horror in which Lanfear reflected on this. If it truly was a dreamless sleep, what was the problem? If you sleep without dreaming, wouldn't it just be like closing your eyes and then (to you) opening them again strait away? This was Lanfears reflection, maybe it wasn't exactly the same for everyone? Balthamel and Aginor aged (their flesh) because apparently they were sealed "closer to the surfise" and were touched by the moving of the wheel. They were sealed closer to the pattern? Ishamael were then sealed somewhere between it all. Is there "movement" between the Pattern/creation and "the dark ones domain"? I.e. was where ishamael were coinside with the patter at certain intervals, the same way as asteroids come in sight with earth on regular intervals?

I think that the forsaken just "knew" the modern tungue...because that's how RJ wrote it and he needed the characters to know the tungue and be able to fit in.

I believe RJ once said at a signing that the Old tongue is so much more confusing and difficult than the new tongue that anyone who can speak the old tongue can learn the new without much effort.

Kinda like learning pig latin once you know English. (that is my analogy, not RJ's.)
