Ok, heres the thing. I know this has been discussed a billion times and I am not trying to start a new thread devoted to this topic but I just do not understand how anyone cannot believe that Steven Seagel should be the one to play Lan (in the hypothetical, never to exist, series).

Lan =

1) Martial Artist
2) Swordsman
3) 6'6'' tall
4) Not as broad or muscular as Perrin
5) Ugly

Steven Seagal =

All of those (well, he is 6'4'' but that is close enough).

Christopher Lambert =

Only 2 and 4 (arguably 5).

All other possibilites =

Not even close.

Where do you get that Lan was 6 foot 6 inches? I thought Rand was taller than him and Rand is not pushing 7 feet!
I, at first, thought Steven Segal also. Now I am wondering if Russell Crowe might not be a good choice as well. He is 6 foot 2, so will be a drop shorter than whatever actor plays Rand. He has also worked with a sword (Gladiator) and moves in that silent, brooding sort of way (Gladiator and LA Confidential). He is also well built, but not as well as Perrin. Finally, although some people might disagree, I do not think he is that good looking. (Of course, I can't figure out what all these women see in Tom Cruise, either). The only thing he doesn't have is martial arts, but if some movie trainer can make Ralph Maccio look good in the Karate Kid, someone can train Crowe as well.
Either way, by the time this series ever gets made into a film, both of them will be waaayyy up there in years. On the other hand, if Clint Eastwood can play an astrounat at 70, anything is possible.
I still think that the best bet would be to make the series into an animated film. Computer animation now looks fantastic!

I agree and i disagree. On Russell Crowe, you made a great choice! I wouldn't have thought of him, and as you said he meets the main requirements, and can be taught the secondary skills. Though the only thing is that Austrailian accent....hmmm borderlanderish???

But on having the entire WOT movie animated...never...yes things have gotten better, but just look at Final Fantasy, i mean, it was good, but it was too soon for today's audience. IMHO i would enjoy a "real people" movie more. Hmmm, though the special effects that could be done.........

1) It mentions in the series that Lan is "of a height with Rand".

2) Contrary to popular belief, Ralph Maccio did Not look like a martial artist in the Karate Kid. ( I just recently watched it again on cable this week, and I have been doing martial arts myself for 5 years, so now I see it in a slightly different light.)

3) At a RJ interview that I went to, RJ mentions that both Lan and Rand were 6'6''.

Well, if RJ said it, I guess that's it. On the other hand, a casting director will have to cast this film. If Lan is 6'6", and almost every aiel is taller than him, that is going to be a casting director's nightmare.

Most Aiel aren't taller, Rand is Taller than most Aiel men. so it shouldn't be that hard to cast.

and Steven Segal can't play Lan for one simple reason

he can't act!!!

have you ever seen a steven segal movie. the dude has no acting tallent what so ever.

Russel Crowe though could be a good Lan though.

since this whole thing is hypothetical anyways, we can hypothesize that all the actors can act. :)

You dont need any acting skill to play Lan! Lan just stands around and looks stoney.

No way Steven Segal should play Lan though. I always kinda pictured Lan as a tall, pretty muscular, square-jawed type dude. Not ugly. I dunno where that came from. He's no pretty boy, but I dont think he's supposed to be ugly either. Nyneave has go to be goin with the dude just for his looks, the guy doesn't talk or anything like that.

Even Steven Segal Hypothetical acting is horrid.

Naw I think Russel Crowe has the right look plus he carries himself right. Just like in that one movie I think it was called the Big Easy. It had him and Kevin Spacy in it. Kevin Spacy has to be in the Wheel of Time movie, but who can he play.

I think he might be a good Davram Bashere, I know he really doesn't have the look, but he carries him self the right way to pull it off.

Personally, I am not so much for actors playing characters in the WOT movie as much as characters in movies playing characters for the WOT movie.

For example, Dan Hedaya's character from Clueless I see as Davram Bashere.

Eli Wallach from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly should play Padan Fain. (BTW, he was the ugly.)

I still see Steven Seagal playing Lan. (BTW, it is mentioned quite a few times that he is plain ugly.)

I have more but these are the ones that pop into my mind.

The movie with Crowe and Kevin Spacey was LA Confidential. I also think Spacey is a great actor, but I do not think that there is a character we have seen so far in the series that he would be good for. Maybe one of the Ashaman - if one has a big enough part.

Lan isn't ugly, infact in his younger day he was a pretty boy, didn't you read New Spring?

Berk

I read New Spring three times.

When he meets his old girlfriend, even she comments how he is much less pretty then the time they were together. (I wish I hadn't lent my copy so I can quote the line and page).

Also, it is mentioned in book 7, when Egwene locates Lan in the Salidar camp, how ugly he is.

" He was quite a beutiful boy, however hard that might be to believe now." A Crown of Swords, hardcover, page 238.

I think this is what they were eluding to:

beautiful boy = soft, pansyfied, ect ....

Now Lan is all hard n' stoney and emotionless ect...

Berk

I disagree. I cannot think of specific lines, but I am positive it has been mentioned a few times by a bunch of people that he is ugly.\

Sigh. I guess I'll have to reread the series again looking for indications. The last time I reread the series was because I was not sure exactly how long it has been since it all began.

Sometime in book 10, I predict, will be the two year anniversary since what I like to call, The Narg Barge.

Get it? You know, he barged in. Funny, right? Oh well. :)

LA Confidential that's the movie, thank you Yudi, but I don't think that Lan's ugly, but just that he's not as pretty as he used to be now, but any way he still kick's much ass.

I can't believe anyone still talk about Narg. Man, the greatest thing I ever heard any one talk about is my man berk who talkin about Narg still.

Berk you are the man.

Plus if he was truly ugly, Birgitte would be all over him.

Naw I don't think even she's stupid enough to mes with Nyneve's man, she'd likely be angry at Lan even if he didn't do anything to encourage it, like Perin's situation, I wish he would just slap Faile and Berelain both, cause all they seem to do is cause him more problems.
